Alexander Beauvais migrated from England to Australia.
Alexander Beauvais came free to Van Diemen's Land (1826-1856)
Alexander was born on 6 March 1797, son of Alexander Beauvais and Mary Dudgeon. He was named after his father and maternal grandfather. He was baptised at St George's, Hanover Square, London.
[1]
A childhood portrait of Alexander and his brother Louis painted by William Woods can be seen here and is displayed in the Nationalmuseum of Stockholm.
Alexander's elder brother Louis was doing business in Australia and Alexander came out with him on one of his trips, ultimately settling in what was then Van Diemen's Land, and is now Tasmania.
He married Harriet Miller, a spinster, on October 17 1833, when he was a bachelor aged 36.
[2]
Sadly, he died the following year.
When he he died in 1834 his occupation was listed as "Gentleman" and he was living in Black Snake, a settlement north of Granton, near Bridgewater, north from Hobart, according to the burial records. According to his probate, his estate was worth no more than 1,300 pounds, which is equivalent to approximately 100,000 pounds in 2023. He is buried at St David's Anglican Church in Hobart and his gravestone can be seen here.
