Mackie graduated from Church Point High School, class of 1940; attended Southwest Louisiana Institute, Lafayette, LA; and served with the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946. After five years of civilian life and realizing his passion was with the military, he reenlisted in the Navy in 1951during the Korean Conflict and retired in 1968 with more than 20 years of service. During his service he served on the USS Kitty Hawk, the USS Ticonderoga, the USS Hancock, and the USS Bonham Richard. After active duty he was a Civil Service Employee at Cecil Field NAS in Jacksonville for 18 years, with time spent on the USS John F. Kennedy, the USS Enterprise, the USS Forestall, and the USS America. Forever known as Pop-Pop by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and Daddy Beaugh by close family friends, he was an inventive story-teller, delighting everyone with fantastic tales. Christmas gifts were to be discovered rather than just received, and many times accompanied by special notes or stories showcasing his unique sense of humor. He took great pride in his Cajun heritage, and was a terrific cook of Louisiana specialties and barbecue. He loved Snoopy, Charlie Brown and all the Peanuts characters. He enjoyed fishing for bream and bass, was a voracious reader, and completed the crossword puzzle and word jumble every day. He was a meticulous record-keeper, and had a special fondness for animals, particularly dogs. In their later years he and his wife enjoyed several afternoons a week watching movies from their fantastic DVD collection, often interrupted by family visits on Sunday afternoons. Those visits home were usually accompanied by little parting gifts of a jar of favorite pickles, a bag of spicy chips, a box of Little Debbie snack cakes, or some other favorite treat.
