Biography

William was born on August 21, 1814 at Kentville, Nova Scotia.[1][2] His father was a Physician in Kentville who had moved there recently after practicing in Edinburgh and New York.

He received a large part of his literary education a Fordham, New York before his family moved to Nova Scotia in 1812. His father, having refused the oath of allegiance, was obliged to leave the United States. They settled in Kentville where his father practiced Medicine until moving to Saint John, New Brunswick in 1824.[2]

William, following in his father's footsteps, trained as a medical doctor. He was the private student of Dr. Valentine Mott, a pre-minent New York surgeon and after studied at the University of Edinburgh where he graduated in 1837.[2] He spent some time afterwards in the hospitals of Paris and Germany before returning to Saint John.[3]

He married Susan Maria Wilson on July 12, 1843 in Saint John. She was a daughter of John Wilson, Esq. of Chamcook, Charlotte County.[4]

He took an interest in he health of community, championing a general public hospital for Saint John, which opened in 1860.[3] He also made many other contributions:

  • He was Coroner from approximately 1839 until his resignation in 1867, a total of twenty-eight years.[5]
  • For eight years, he was in charge of the local poor house.
  • He presided over the board of hospital commissioners from 1860 until at least 1887
  • He was president of the medical society and the college of physicians and surgeons a number times
  • He was president of provincial Board of Health in 1887.
  • He conributed to the Medical and Surgical Journal of Montreal, at one time serving as New Brunswick editor of that publication[6]

His wife passed away in 1876.[7]

William passed away on December 17, 1907 at the age of 94.[1][8] He was interred at the Fernhill Cemetery.[7]
