Biography

Pvt D. K. Baty served with the United States Army during the Spanish-American War.

Daniel was born 19 Jul 1877 at Sedgwick County, Kansas the son of Clark F and Sarah Ellen (McLaughlin/McGlothlin) Baty.[1]

Except as otherwise footnoted, the following abstracted from Plains Kansas 100 Years.[2]

Daniel's father, Clark Baty, first came to Kansas in 1869 as a buffalo hunter. D.K., as he was known to all, was the second child of Clark and Ellen Baty, born in 1877.[3] After his education, D.K. left the family farm in Barton County and in 1898 enlisted in the Spanish-American War serving as a private with Company C of the Third Missouri Infantry and was discharged 1898.[4] He received a teaching certificate from the Central Normal College of Great Bend, Kansas. He left teaching and in 1910 came to Seward County, Kansas purchasing the headquarters of the old Crooked L ranch. He married Augusta Meckenroth of Barton County on 2 May 1910 and moved to Plains, Kansas where he was a well-known farmer. Augusta passed away in 1928 after having four daughters. In 1945, D.K. moved to Liberal, Kansas where he married Hannah Johnson in 1950. Hannah passed away in 1972.

D.K. Baty contributed to many endeavors of the Plains community and is remembered for his sponsorship of the annual Christmas banquet for students returning home over the holiday. He passed away 7 December 1973 at Liberal, Kansas and is interred at the Plains Cemetery, Plains, Kansas.[5]
