John C. Bates was born on 15 January 1826 in Southampton, York, New Brunswick, Canada, son of John Bates (1792–~1868) and Susannah Flint (1798–>1871).

John married Sarah E Dunlop (born on 17 February 1837 in New Brunswick; daughter of John King Dunlop and Margaret Peggy Cronkhite). Their children were:
