George, born in 1827, Sussex, England, arrived in Australia in 1834 at the age of 7 years with his parents Edward and susanna, and later settled at "The Glen" , Braidwood, NSW. On the death of George in 1897 "The Glen" was handed down to his eldest son George Arthur, and on his death in 1918 to his wife Mary, and on her death was left to the three sons of his brother (Frederick Edward Bassingthwaighte) that is, Raymond George, Norman John and Ronald Edward. These three boys were then trading as Bassingthwaighte Bros. here at Wallendbeen, and used "The Glen" (4,282 acres) to run Merino Wethers for wool growing. "The Glen" was sold by Bassingthwaighte Bros. to a Mr. Balmain of Balmain Motors, Cooma, NSW in July 1954. This property is still owned by the Balmain family.
