At the age of 19 he enlisted with the Union Army on 27 March 1862. He was mustered into Company I, 17th Regiment, Iowa Infantry. John was promoted to 8th Corporal on 1 August 1862.[4]
He was killed in the Battle of Champion Hill, Jackson, Mississippi on 14 May 1863. John is buried in the Vicksburg National Cemetery in an unknown grave.[5]
John had two brothers who also joined the Union Army, both died during the Civil War: William L. Bartow (1825- 1861)[6] and Cyrus Bartow Jr (1838-1864).[7]
