LIGHTNING STROKE
Killed Young Starley Barton on Alvin Smith Farm near Marshall Tuesday Morning.
Victim's Neck Broken - Willliam Hiser, Companion of Deceased Rendered Unconscious but Soon Recovered.
Starley Barton, son of Thomas Barton, of near Marshall, was killed by a stroke of lightning early Tuesday morning. Young Barton, who was about twenty-one years of age, had been employed since March as a farm hand by Alvin Smith, a well known farmer residing less than a mile west of Marshall.
The fatal stroke fell from the clouds about half past seven. The unfortunate young man and William Hiser, who also lives on the Smith farm, had gone out early in the morning into a field for the purpose of cutting up the top of a fallen tree into fuel for use in threshing.
There was a blinding flash and a roar of thunder and the two men fell to the earth. Hiser was shocked into insensibility, but revived in a few minutes to discover that his companion had been less fortunate. He at once notified Mr. Smith of the occurrence and Dr. Mason, of Marshall, was hastily summoned by telephone. Dr. Mason found that young Barton was far beyond human aid, having evidently been killed instantly. His neck was broken.
There were no other marks of injury and after the body was removed to his father's home, his watch was found to be still running. In such cases a watch often stops, and there have been frequent cases in which the metal has been melted into a shapeless mass.
The bolt, or another falling at the same time, struck a small hickory tree about one hundred feet from where the men were working. There was no other timber near by.
The funeral of the victim of the occurrence was helf at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Marshall M. E. Church.
