Jonathan was born at Northampton, Massachusetts about 1757, the son of Preserved Bartlett (1717-1772) and Experience Phelps (1717-1766).
He served in the Continental Army from Hampshire County, Massachusetts as a Private in Captain Simeon Clapp’s Company, Colonel David Well’s Regiment. He enlisted 10 May 1777 for 2 months and was discharged 10 July 1777. He served for 2 months, 9 days, including marching on an expedition to Ticonderoga.
He also served as a Private in Captain Jonathan Wales’ Company, Colonel Dickinson’s Hampshire County Regiment. He enlisted 17 August 1777 and served for 8 days. He marched to East Hoosac on an alarm, and then to Pittsfield where the company took charge of and guarded Hessian prisoners to Springfield by order of Brigadier General Fellows. He was also a Private in Captain Jonathan Wale’s Company, Colonel Ezra May’s Regiment. He enlisted 22 Sep 1777 and was discharged 15 Oct 1777 for a service of 28 days during which time he marched to Stillwater and Saratoga.
He is indexed in the Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution in Vol 1, pg. 717 as Jonathan Bartlet, and on pg. 736 as Jonathan Bartlit.
He married Dorcas Bartlett (1758-1815) at Springfield, Massachusetts on 10 Jun 1779. They were the parents of nine known children.
He passed away in 1830 and is buried at the Main Street Cemetery, Easthampton, Massachusetts.
There is an unsourced date listed on his Find a Grave profile (memorial # 123576909) listing his DOB as 16 May 1757 at Northampton. His daughter Dorcas Bartlett Frary's death record gives his place of birth as Easthampton.
