Margaret Louise Barrington was born 10 May 1896 in Malin, County Donegal, daughter of Richard Barrington, RIC sergeant residing Ballyloogy, Co Tipperary, and Charlotte Barrington (née Scott). [1]
She spent much of her childhood living with her maternal grandfather due to her mother's poor health. She later moved to Dungannon, County Tyrone with her parents.[2]
At the 1901 census: Richard Barrington, 35 yrs, RIC, wife Charlotte E 30 yrs, Marguarite L 4 yrs, Henriatta C 1 yrs resided in 1901 in house 193.1 in Maghera (Maghera, Londonderry). [3] In 1911 she was at boarding school, Kenmare College, in Dublin, as Marguerite Barrington.[4]
Margaret married on 24 December 1918 to the historian Edmund Curtis (Professor of History TCD)[5]; she left him in 1924.
Margaret married in London in March 1926 to Liam O'Flaherty.[6] Their only child, Pegeen, was born there soon after. In 1932 they separated, and Margaret settled in London.
Upon the outbreak of World War II, Barrington returned to Ireland, living in Leap, County Cork. She lived in Castletownsend from 1947 to 1953, then settled in Kinsale.
She helped refugees from Nazi Germany and was an active supporter of the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War.
She died in a Kinsale nursing home on 8 March 1982, and is buried locally.
Wikipedia and others have the marriage to Edmund Curtis as 1922- but the marriage certificate is for 1918.
