Biography

William Alexander Barr was born on February 15, 1825, in Lawrence, Monroe County, Mississippi, to parents Joseph Barr and Eliza D. Mellard Barr. Throughout his life, William established himself as a farmer and merchant, reflecting his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to his community.

In 1850, William was residing in Police District 2, Pike County, Mississippi, where he worked as a farmer. By 1860, he had transitioned to merchant activities while continuing to live near the Holmesville post office in Pike County. During this time, he also owned at least five slaves, reflecting the era's prevalent economic and social practices.

The 1870 census further confirms William's merchant occupation, as he continued to live near the Holmesville post office in Township 3, Range 9, Pike County.

Tragically, William Alexander Barr passed away on May 7, 1871, in Covington, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. He was laid to rest at Holmesville Cemetery in Pike County, Mississippi, leaving behind a legacy as a businessman, farmer, and member of his community.
