Horace and his family went from England in 1911 bringing their children with them to New Zealand. They moved to Melbourne Australia in March 1914. They settled at a farm called “Miramar” at what was 188 Wattle Avenue Werribee Victoria, which is now a housing estate. The 1919 electoral roll shows they were there at that time. The intervening five-years is unknown.

In Esther Murray’s book (Hazel Esther Barnham) The Times I Knew, Horace worked at the State Research Farm during the day and worked the family farm at night and weekends until the farm paid its way.
