  • Hugh Barnett was born about 1725-30.[1] Hugh came from Pennsylvania to Orange, North Carolina with his wife was a Miss Currie, along with her brothers.[2] Hugh Barnett, with brothers Robert Barnett and William Barnett and son were listed in the Orange, NC, Tax List for 1752-53.[3] James Currie and Matthew Currie were also listed for the same tax year 1752-53.[4] Shortly thereafter James Curry and John Curry were listed in Orange County, NC, deeds along with Hugh Barnett as early as 27 April 1754.[5] James Currie and the Barnett brothers were in the 1755 Orange County ,NC, Tax List.[6] The Currie and Barnett lands were in that part of Orange that became Caswell County then finally Person County, North Carolina.[7]

( Transcript of Will) In the name of God amen. I Hugh Barnett of the County of Person and State of North Carolina. Being in a low state of health but of sound mind and Memory thanks Be to Almighty God for it do make Constitute this my last will and Testament in manner and form Following First my will is that all my Just Debts and funeral Expences be paid. Secondly I lend to my Beloved wife Elizabeth Barnett During her natural life or widowhood All my lands lying on the west side of Adams Creek up to the mouth of the Fishing Branch thence up the said Branch. Also the land on the east side of the Creek that is above the road That is intendance for her to have the use of Benefit of as usual also my Negro man named Dick and my Big of Bible and also one third part of my personal Estate to be lotted out to her by my Executors in as Just a manner as they with convenancy can, except thirty pounds Virginia money which I have lodged in the hands of my son in law Michael Dickson. Then I give to my son Thomas Barnett Ten shillings and one of Blairs Sermon Books. Item I give to my son John Barnett Ten Shillings and my Book called Bostons forefold Stakes. Item I give to my son Hugh Barnett all my land lying on the east side of Adams Creek up to the mouth of the Fishing Branch thence up the said Branch as for all my land extends only the use and benefit of that land which we have the benefit of on that side the Creek I Reserve to my wife Elizabeth during her natural life or widowhood. Item my pleasure Is that my daughter in law Margaret Barnett shall have the Full Benefit of that land which I give to my Grandson Hugh Barnett so long as she supports her Husbands will or Remains in widowhood. Should it otherwise happen then May my Executers take it to the Use of my Grandson As they think Best. Should my Grandson Hugh Barnett Die Before he comes of age or his lawfull Begotten heir then my pleasure is that the above land I Give to my son John Barnett and hisHeirs forever. Item I give to my daughter margaret Dixon Ten shillings. Item I give to my son William Barnett Ten Shillings Item I give to my Grandson John Barnet Dickson the above mentioned thirty pounds Virginia money I lodged in the hands of my son in law Michael Dickson if he dies before he Comes of full age or has a lawfull Begotten heir the said money Be Equally Divided Between my three youngest Children to wit James, Elizabeth and Mary Barnett or their heirs. Item..to my son Curry Barnett Ten shillings & my Burkett's explanation on the new Testament. Item I give to my Daughter Rebakah Dewest ten shillings. Item I give to my son James Barnett at the death or marriage of my aforesaid wife Elizabeth All my lands lying on the west side of Adams Creek and Fishing Branch and my Negro man named Dick and the choice of my Horses at my Death with all my plantation tools. Should he Die Before he comes of age or his a lawfull Begotten heirs Then his part of my Estate to be Equally Divided Between my youngest Daughters Viz. Elizabeth and Mary Barnett or the surviving one of them. Item I give to my Daughter Elizabeth Barnett ten Horses saddle & Bridle to be evaluated By my executors to Eighteen Pounds Virginia money and a feather Bed and furniture to be Valued at seven pounds Ten shilling Virginia money or as near it as possible Item I give to my Daughter Mary Barnett a horse Saddle & Bridle to be valued as Before mentioned to Eighteen pounds Virginia money and a feather Bed and furniture to be valued to seven pound ten shillings Virginia or as near as possible Should Either or Both of my last mentioned Daughters Die Before they come to full age then their part of my Estate to fall to the survivors of my three youngest Children to wit James Elizabeth and Mary Barnett Also my will is that the above legacees to my last Children that are under age to be Kept by my above said Wife until they come of age or in case of the Death or Marriage of said wife to be Kept by my Executors until they come of age all the Rest Residue and Remainder if any Except I lent my above said wife and not otherways disposed of to Be Equally Divided between my three aforesaid youngest Children or the surviver or survivers also all the Rest Residue and Remainder if any Except what I lent my abovee said wife & Not otherways Disposed of to be Equally divided Between my three youngest Children Etc.
