Biography

The daughter of Albert Barnes and Mary Ann (Ogle) Barnes, Harriet Barnes was born in Hamilton County, Indiana^{[citation needed]} in 1845, migrating westward with her family to Iowa and residing in 1850 in Iowa Township, Iowa.^[1][2] Her mother died in 1856 and her father in 1859; in 1860, Harriet lived with her siblings, residing in the Iowa Township^[3] home of 66--year-old James Barnes, likely a cousin.

Harriet married Nelson Libby (1823-1899), the son of Caleb Libby and Abigail Simonton, marrying in Davenport, Iowa on July 29, 1863^[4] and having three known children together:

1. Jessie Mae Libby (1864-1938)
2. Nelson Hervey Libby (1875-1877)
3. Walter Ray Libby (1878-1944)

They made their home in Marengo Township, Iowa, where Nelson Libby owned and operated a hardware store.^[5][6] By 1900, Harriet and her family had left Iowa and moved to Montana, residing in Flathead Township, where Nelson Libby had taken up farming.^[7]

Widowed in 1899, Harriet lived in 1910 in Kalispell, Montana,^[8] She later moved with her children to Seattle, Washington. Harriet Libby passed away in Seattle^[9][10] at the age of 80 and is buried at Conrad Memorial Cemetery in Kalispell, Montana.^[11]
