MR BARNARD'S SAD FATE. THE INQUEST. An inquest was held at Wimbledon today on the body of Frederick Barnard, aged 50, the well-known black and white artist, who lost his life by a fire which occurred his bedroom on Monday morning. The first witness was Mrs Alice Barnard, widow, who stated that she resided in Hampstead. She identified the body.[11]

According to the St James Gazette: THE LATE MR. FRED BARNARD, INQUEST AND VERDICT. An inquest was held at Wimbledon yesterday on the body of Mr. Frederick Barnard, aged fifty, the wellknown black-and-white artist, who lost his life by the fire which occurred in his bed-room on Sunday morning. The first witness was Mrs. Alice Barnard, the widow, who stated that she resided Hampstead. She identified the body and stated that her husband had not been well. He had suffered from insomnia and had contracted a habit of smoking in bed. Evidence was given that the deceased had lodged for some time at Wimbledon, and that on Sunday at noon smoke was seen coming from his bed-room window. On the room being broken into it was found to be in flames, and the deceased was lying dead in bed, by the side of which lay a pipe. A doctor said that death was due to suffocation, and verdict Accidental Death was returned.[12]

According to the Cheshire Observer: Mr. Frederick Barnard, who was burned to death in his bedroom at the house of his friend Mr. Ambrose Augustus Myall on Sunday night, was a clever black-and-white artist, and would have attained greater success than he did with a little more business capacity and application. His Dickens series was immensely popular. Though chiefly known for black-and-white work, he has done a good deal of painting, and his ' Sidney Carton on the Scaffold ' was one of the sensations of the Academy in 1883. The precise cause of the accident which led to his death is at present unknown, and Mr. Barnard when found, though still alive, was too much injured to give any account of it, but it is supposed that he was smoking in bed and set the bedclothes on fire.[13]

Also shown, in different handwriting, is one of his children Katherine Barnard (1844-1912) Barnard-4055 living at 12 Highbury Terrace, Islington, Middlesex from before 1911 until her death, and one of his grandchildren Kate Barnard Blaikley (1879-1969) Blaikley-22 living at 5 Canfield Gardens, Hampstead, Middlesex from before 1939 until before her death. These hand-written notes record the Barnard family, and others, commencing with William Barnard (1605-1682) through to a John Barnard, a farmer in 1898, living at Haslingfield, 1¼ miles from Barrington, Cambridgeshire, where Barnard ancestors had lived since 1605. A copy of these notes is in the possession of Trevor Pickup (Pickup-177) and Michael Pickup (Pickup-178).
