He was a grazier living at Weering near Beeac, Victoria, Australia in 1913 to 1937 according to the annual electoral rolls[2]
His World War I record service indicates he Joined the Australian Imperial Forces on 18 Jun 1915. Service Record No. 1794[3]
He was in the 2nd Reinforcement, 24th Battalion
He was wounded in action in France in August 1916
He was captured at Bullecourt in May 1917 and became a German prisoner of war. He sustained a broken arm.
He returned to Australia on 25 March 1919.

He married Mary Missen on 10 September 1924 in Beeac, Victoria, Australia.[5]

Tom and Mary Barnard had four children and lived at the property known as Gumleigh, Weering.
He passed away on 24 Jul 1939 in Beeac, Victoria, Australia[7] and was buried at the Beeac Cemetery, Beeac, Colac Otway Shire, Victoria, Australia[8].
BARNARD.—On the 24th July, at Beeac, Walter Thomas, beloved husband of Mary, and loving father of Roma, Max, Frank, and Gwenneth devoted third son of Mr W J Barnard and the late Mrs Barnard aged 47 years.
After Tom's death, Mary continued to live on the farm, which was later handed down to her second son, while her eldest son Max Barnard had another property down the road in Beeac.
