James Tooke died in 1662 (before this Susanna Mary Barnham died). No mention of a wife in his will. Please post a valid source of James Tooke being married to Susanna Mary Barnham.
Hi Janet what sources or corrections with sources could we find to correct any of these issues ? I would appreciate the help and thank you for your post and information about the will!
James Tooke's will, probated in 1662, does not mention a wife of his. His three children, Thomas, William, and Dorothy (Tooke) Harvey are mentioned in this will. See excerpt from book "Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight" that I have linked below. It would be helpful to establish the birth dates of this James Tooke's children and compare that to the children from the marriage to Thomas Duke. This would show if there is a possibility of Susanna Mary Barnham being a mother to the Tooke children.
Cited in the same book shows that James Tooke came over to the colonies on The George in 1621. He isn't listed on the ship passenger list, he is vouched as coming on The George in a land grant in 1632. There could be a wife at that time but no record exists to show that. Regardless, any wife of James Tooke likely would have died prior to his will probate of 1662 since no wife is mentioned. Therefore, this Susanna Mary Barnham Duke is likely not a wife of James Tooke since she died after his death.
I find that making a timeline of events helps to show the possibility of relations. Wills are another way to confirm death dates and relationships. Dates of arrival during this time are also very helpful. When did Susanna Mary Barnham arrive in the colonies?
Also, if Susanna Mary Barnham was not the wife of James Tooke, then she is not the mother of Dorothy Tooke. That also needs to be corrected.
Also, please note that the listed daughter, Dorothy Commander, is actually Dorothy Tooke's brother, Thomas Tooke's daughter. She is listed in Dorothy's will along with the other children of Thomas Tooke's. Thomas's daughter, Dorothy Tooke, married Joseph Commander. Thomas Tooke was named executor of Dorothy Tooke Harvey's will by her.
