Constant was born 21 September 1845, on the Ohio farm of his father, Thomas Barchus, Jr. and mother, Sarah Bacon. He was the next-to-youngest of four children, and the only son.
His father died when Constant was three years old, in 1848. In the 1850 census, Constant is found with his mother and sisters still on the family farm in Concord, Delaware, Ohio. [1]
In 1855 the family moved to Lake Prairie, Marion County, Iowa, where they lived with Sarah's brother, Samuel Bacon. On the 1856 Iowa State Census, Samuel and his wife Leah have six children, plus the five in the Barchus family, to make a total of thirteen in the household. [2]
In 1864, in company with his mother and her new husband, Reuben Daniels, Sr., and his three sisters and Reuben's adult children, Constant Barchus traveled the Oregon Trail from Elk Creek, Jasper county, Iowa, to Linn County, in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Six years later, in the 1870 census of Peoria, Linn County, Oregon, Constant Barchus, age 24, is living with his mother Sarah, age 53, and her husband Reuben Daniels, age 69, on Reuben's farm. Constant is listed as "works on farm".[3]
The 1870 U S Federal Census for Peoria was dated 23 August, 1870. Constant married Ann Elizabeth Sherrill, 'the girl next door', on 16 Feb 1871. On the 1880 Census for Halsey (next to Peoria), Annie E, age 24, and Constant, age 35, have three children:[4]
Jame L, age 7
Ira D, age 5
Franklin, age 2
On the 1880 U.S. Census, In Linn County, Oregon, Constant is married to Anna Elizabeth Sherrill, and they are living on Constant's farm, next to her uncle Edward Evans. Edward's farm is right on the banks of the Willamette River, at Irish Bend. Ann's mother, Mary Ann (Evans) Sherrill, is Edward's sister, and lives near-by with her husband James Sherrill.[5]
In the 1885 Washington State Census, Constant Barchus and James Sherrill had both moved their families to Clark County, Washington, in the area of Chelatchie. They both took out Homestead claims on 160 acres of land. Constant received the Patent from the US Bureau of Land Management in 1897, and in 1889 he purchased 40 acres contiguous with his land claim for a cash sale from the BLM, making his farm a total of 200 acres.
In 1900, Constant lived in Chelatchie, Clark, Washington, with his married son James, James' wife Bette and their three young children. Constant's wife Annie and six of his children lived with them also.[6]
In the 1910 U. S. Census, Constant is in his own house again, with his wife Ann, and three young sons.[7]
On the 1920 Census, Constant Barchus is renting his house, in the town of Heisson, Clark County, Washington, and lives with only his wife Annie.[8]
Constant Barchus' wife Ann Elizabeth (Sherrill) Barchus died 22 September 1920, at the age of 67 years and 10 months. [9]

Interview with Constant Barchus

My mother, Helga Dellinger, interviewed Charles Delmon Barchus, grandson of Constant Barchus, (and son of Ira Delmon Barchus), in 1992, and reported to me the following from their conversation:
"I was haying with my grandfather, Constant Barchus and I asked him about when he came to Oregon. He told me he had four matched black horses to drive his wagon (in 1864) instead of the usual oxen. He said he had matching six-shooters in holsters at his sides. He mentioned that some Indians stole some of the horses and he chased after them with the reset of the men, but they never got the horses back." [This incident is mentioned in the journal kept by WJ Campbell, Constant's brother-in-law, of the trip to Oregon.]
Delmon, as he was known to our family, described his grandfather as "a red-haired, fiddle-playing Irishman". Delmon told Helga that as his father and uncles grew up, they learned to play the bass and other instruments, and with Constant on the fiddle, made a band that played at the Saturday night dances in the local barns.

Comment by Constant's great-granddaughter

My father told me, when I asked about my ancestors, that 'there was one that was Irish, and one that was of Scots descent, who married each other'. Once I understood that Barchus was Irish, and saw that Constant's grand-mother was Margaret McKenzie (Scot) I knew who he meant. It was the marriage of Thomas Barchus, Sr. to Margaret McKenzie, probably about 1809, when she was twenty and he was twenty-four. Thomas Barchus jr was born in 1812. Dellinger-332
