Biography

Suzanne (Barbot) Chaille has French origins.
This profile is part of the Barbot Name Study.
Suzanne (Barbot) Chaille is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Suzanne Barbot

  • Her given name Barbot would have stayed the same upon marriage in the French custom. However, it is more probable that because she married in England that she may have followed the English and Baptist custom and transitioned her last name to her husband's name Chaille upon marriage. Stanley have you come across many “French” women born in England who kept their maiden name after marriage? I found the names confusing with the actual immigrants in the 1690s and early 1700s - hard to know if it’s the wife or a sister with the same Christian name. In 1715 an original immigrant wrote her will using her husband’s surname; I can’t recall any wills after that date which used maiden names. This is just my experience of course, and I thought it had generally died out with the first generation.

Great Question ! .. There is a difference between what a woman who identifies herself as French, [and usually catholic] and practiced the French custom, [ usually following the La Coutume de Paris] of keeping her given name even upon marriage and the rules of inheritance and the practice of English documents in recording family names. It depends on which area of England and more specifically London where the French culture and customs practiced were stronger. [Even to this day !] I agree with you that after the migrating "first generation" the French customs were more often then not transitioned to English legal and cultural customs. It is especially true for protestants and marriage's to established English families. One group that is an exception are the French families that maintain their ties to France, French Netherlands and Canada Nouvelle France. My experience is that it is a case by case research in England and not a general practice as it was elsewhere. In this case the protestant records of her children clearly reference her as Chaille so I defaulted to her accepting her husband's [French] last name. Whether she maintained her given name within the family is still an unknown possibility I've seen in other families. In her case it remains a research question at best and depends in part how far the French family had transitioned into the English culture and legal requirements.

Great collaboration Anne !

I edited the place of death of Suzanne Barbot. She was buried at the Old Ford, Bow, London and her residence was Bromley, London. I didn't know how to put the source in though. I have photos of the 2 pages of the burial register. Surely if we edit a profile we have to tell the profile manager?
