Ancestral surname variants include: Barbot, Barbeau, Barboteau

There are mmany Barbeau and Barbot families in Bordeaux France often came from the same lines. Barbeau and Barbot when French pronounced sound the same. There is a general theory that many Barbeau families who were Catholics in the same region and became Protestant Huguenots also changed their surnames to Barbot.

Jean Antoine Barbot de Remeaux (Rameaux) "de Remeaux" could be a French "de" or "du" conveyance, (such as a title, land, authority or position), usually by a royal authority. It might refer to a religious term. (Palm Sunday)

Antoine Barbot Papers

Barbot papers reference excerpt:

"Detailed Collection Inventory: 11/66/01-09 Barbot family papers, 1791 – 1824 (approx. 65 items) Papers of Antoine Barbot (1785-1855), Charleston estate executor and merchant, include letters in French and English, accounts, passports for Saint-Domingue (1803), a marriage certificate, receipts and the estate papers of Antoine Barbot and Anna DuBois.

Also included are papers relating to the estate of Josephine LeChais Abel, legal papers of Jean P. Esnard and other business matters. Letters to Anna DuBois from Caroline Garen sent from Martinique and Europe discuss family and personal matters. " [11]

There is an astonishing volume of research here on hundreds of families, notably emigre families from Santo Domingo, families from Minorca (one of the Spanish Balearic Islands), families with Catholic roots, and families decended from Georgia's colonial settlers. His research encompassed collateral lines and families of other denominations, as well. Included are: detailed genealogical charts; correspondence; legal documents; Bible, church and public record abstracts; memoirs; articles and clippings; invitations; cards; photographs, etc.

The Barbot family papers, some of which are in French, range from photocopied material of the family's French ancestrage, to genealogical charts, notes, family reminiscences, printed Confederate muster rolls, letters, and newspaper clippings. [12]

Historical Article Excerpt

The Batteys descended in part from the Protestant branch of the Barbot family of France which immigrated to New York.

The first of the Barbots to come to the South was Jean Antoine Barbot (1785-1855), who settled in Charleston.

Jean Antoine de Rimeau Barbot (1785-1855) came to Charleston, S.C. some years after watching his father's beheading in the French Revolution and his mother's subsequent heart attack and death upon witnessing the execution of her husband.

In Charleston, he married Caesarine Francoise Antoinette Esnard (1800-1880) and fathered 14 children. Some of the family eventually settled in Augusta, Ga. [13][14][15]
