"Samuel Harvard Barboo Jr., 76, quietly and peacefully finished his labor here on earth on Jan. 12, 2007. He was at his home surrounded by family and friends. Sam was born Dec. 22, 1930, to Priscilla and Samuel Harvard Barboo Sr. Capt. Barboo served more than 30 years in the U.S. Navy. He received his Ph.D. in public health from University of California Los Angeles. During his career in the Navy's Occupational Health Program, he received numerous awards for his outstanding and innovative approach to his many assigned projects. His mature, confident leadership was with distinction. His technical expertise in the field of occupational health was invaluable to the U.S. Navy. He was in the forefront in writing and publishing Naval Occupational Health Control Programs for asbestos, hearing loss and lead poisoning. In 1978 Capt. Barboo established the Navy Occupational Safety and Health Inspection Program which required on-site inspections of all naval shore activities worldwide. This gave Capt. Barboo his greatest opportunity in his distinguished career of ensuring that the many occupational safety and health requirements he had written would now be properly implemented, providing the maximum protection available for employees working in such potentially hazardous environments. The countless number of serious injuries/illnesses Capt. Barboo prevented is known only to God. Sam Barboo and his late wife Carol Barboo, the love of his life, enjoyed traveling the world together. Sam's family includes his loving friends at Suffolk Christian Church where Sam had served God as chairman of the Board of Deacons and as a Sunday school teacher. Sam was the group coordinator of the Norfolk Us TOO organization for more than 10 years. Us TOO is a grassroots organization established worldwide to enhance the quality of life for all those affected by prostate cancer. Sam's strength, knowledge, and helpful attitude was felt by everyone whom he touched, especially those recently diagnosed. Even in his last months of failing health, he attended every meeting and stayed as long as his health would permit. It appeared that his final purpose there was to ensure that the group would continue in his absence. To Sam we all say thanks for all you did and wish you everlasting love. He is survived by his mother, Priscilla K. Barboo of Tucson, Ariz.; his daughters, Elizabeth J. Croskrey and husband Michael of Middletown R.I., and Laura Joyce and husband Byron of Oklahoma City; son, Sam E. Barboo and wife Naoko of San Diego, Calif.; stepchildren, Virginia F. Thomas and husband Edward of Suffolk, Charles D. Frohman of Washington, D.C., and Paul E. Frohman of Irvine, Calif.; grandchildren, Rachael A., John M., and Daniel T. Croskrey; stepgrandson, E. Clifton Thomas IV; brothers, John Barboo, Joe Barboo and wife Eunie; sister, Priscilla Laney and husband Bill; three nephews and a niece and countless friends. A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Suffolk Christian Church, 216 N. Main St., Suffolk, by the Rev. Michael D. Halley with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk.
