After his enlistment ended in 1945, John returned to acting. Banner appeared on Broadway three times and appeared in over 40 feature films. Eventually, he ended up as the loveable Sgt Schultz in the hit TV Comedy "Hogan's Heroes", which ran for six years, alongside actors Bob Crane, Werner Klemperer, Richard Dawson, Ivan Dixon, Robert Carey and Larry Hovis.
John married Christine Renee Gemenne (1922-2011) 19 Jun 1965, in Los Angeles County, California.
