Johann "John" Banner was born 28 Jan 1910, in Stanislav, Austria-Hungary (now Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine). His parents were David Banner (1880–1942) and Mina Treiber (1886–1942), both of whom died at Maly Trostenic (death camp) on 15 and 16 June 1942, respectively. John studied law at the University of Vienna, but at some time quit to become an actor, and studied at the Volkstheatre. In 1938, while working with an acting troupe in Switzerland, Hitler annexed Austria; Banner, being a Jew, emigrated to the USA where he quickly learned English.

On 22 Mar 1943, John enlisted in the US Army Air Forces, he did basic training in Atlantic City, and afterward, he eventually became a Supply Sergeant. After his enlistment ended in 1945, John returned to acting. Banner appeared on Broadway three times and appeared in over 40 feature films. Eventually, he ended up as the loveable Sgt Schultz in the hit TV Comedy "Hogan's Heroes", which ran for six years, alongside actors Bob Crane, Werner Klemperer, Richard Dawson, Ivan Dixon, Robert Carey and Larry Hovis.

John married Christine Renee Gemenne (1922-2011) 19 Jun 1965, in Los Angeles County, California.

John passed away 28 Jan 1973, in Vienna, Wien Stadt, Vienna (Wien), Austria. And is buried in the Friedhof Mauer Cemetery, in Mauer, Wien Stadt, Vienna (Wien), Austria.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
