Biography

Alexander was a Friend (Quaker)

Alexander Bane, Bean

Uncertain Origin

The origin of the Banes in Pennsylvania is uncertain. Johnston writes of a Scotish James Bane who immigrated to New Castle County, Delaware in 1688, but does not mention the brothers Alexander or Mordecai Bane.[1]

Alexander is commonly said to be the son of a James Bane (b c. 1650), possibly of Kirkliston in the Lothian region of Scotland.[2] Another proposed father is John Bane. The only evidence for a John Bane or Bean found by Jim Murphy was a Chester County land patent, dated 4 April 1704 wherein 508 acres were registered to John Bean; this property was first registered to John Richard on 2 August 1684 and then to John Bean on 6 April 1702 [Pennsylvania Patent Index 1684-1781, A2, page 664].[2]

Alexander's mother is also uncertain. A proposed mother is a Helen Thompson, who was born ~1661 in Lothian; another is a Jean Chambers also born ~1661 in Lothian.[2] No documentation for either has been found, and as Murphy points out, no children were named either Helen or Jean.[2]

Alexander is said to have emigrated from Scotland and to have been born c. 1688.[3] Possible locations are Iverness Shire, Scotland or Annan or Annandale, south of Edinburgh, Scotland.[2] This date is probably based on his marriage date (1713).

Note: The name was usually spelled Bane, but sometimes Bean.

Alexander and Mordecai Bane were brothers, and they lived next to each other. A probate document for the estate of Mordecai, dated November 18, 1748, describes his lands as "bounded by the land of ... Alexander Bane."[2]

Family

Alexander married 4th month, 5th day, 1713 at the Merion Friends Meeting House, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania to Jane Moore.[2]

Children of Alexander and Jane:[2][3]

  1. Jane Bane born "29/5th month/1714" was noted on separate non-Quaker record, as a daughter of Alexander Bane of Goshen. Jane married Jonas Chamberlain, an emigrant who settled in Sadsbury, Lancaster County, PA. and married 8 September 1734. Jonas died 9 August 1771 and Jane died 3 April 1777. There were 9 children.
  1. Mary Bane born 26/9th month/1715. Quaker records definitely state this Mary is the daughter of Alexander Bane.
  1. William Bane born 19/8th month/ 1717 and married Margaret __ . The Goshen Quaker records note William and Margaret had two sons: Thomas Bane, born 11/6th month/1747 and buried 29/6th month/1769, and Jonathan buried 4th month 1765.
  1. Catharine Bane was born 5th day/8th month/1719.* Married to __ Elliot in 1738 at Goshen Meeting House (courtesy of Rosalie Elmore e-mail 1/2003)
  1. Alexander Bane (Jr.), 17/9th month/1721
  1. Daniel Bane, 25/11th month/ 1723

Quaker

Alexander was a Quaker, as his name was recorded by the Goshen Quaker settlement at Chester County, Pennsylvania.[2] Both he and his wife, Jane, were Quakers. Their marriage was performed at the Merion Friends Meeting House. Alexander and Jane were present at the marriage of James Burk to Mary Bane, daughter of Mordecai Bane in 1730.[2] Alexander witnessed the marriage of Mordecai Bane Jr. to Mary Cullen, this time without his wife, Jane.[2]

Bane-258 and Bane-42 are not ready to be merged because: more evidence to confirm same person given different places of birth - I think this must have been a profile that I adopted, I don't have more information myself.
Bane-258 and Bane-42 appear to represent the same person because: Alternate dates of death: See also https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/92193133/alexander-bane

The History of Chester County says "Alexander of New Castle, Delaware, Descendant of James who moved from Delaware to Goshen, Chester Co., PA, thence to Keyser, Hampshire Co. Virginia, thence to Illinois ...."

Both Mordecai and Alexander purchased 200 acres of land in Goshen Twp., Chester Co., Alexander in 1711, and Mordecai in 1716. More documentation in "Clan MacBean of North America" or The Library of the University of West Virginia, where the research work of Frank J. Bane is deposited.
