Biography

Eliza Balmer fought for the right of women to attend the University of Toronto and was its first female student. She graduated with a B.A. from University College in 1886. After graduating, she taught at Harbord Collegiate in Toronto.^[1][2]

On the Census of Canada, 1911, she was recorded living with her widowed mother, Jane, and an aunt, Sarah Smith. Both she and Sarah are described as teachers; however, her date of birth is given as September 1870.^[3]

In October 1912, she appeared on a ship's passenger list with Jane Balmer, 75, a widow. She gave her age as 48.^[4]

She died in 1915 of pellagra^[5] and was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.^[6]
