Mother of President George Washington

[1] "The Ancestry of George Washington", by Sons of Liberty Chapter-Sons of the American Revolution-Documentation of birth, death, and marriage dates; Documentation of husband, Captain Augustine Washington and son, President George Washington

Mary Ball was born after 07 February 1707, [1][2] daughter of Colonel Joseph Ball of Epping Forests in Lancaster, Virginia by his second wife, Mary (Bennett?) Johnson, widow of William Johnson, from Norwich, England.[3]. She had two half-siblings, Elizabeth Johnson and John Johnson[4].

Mary was fatherless by the age of three; her mother remarried[3] a man by the name of Richard Hewes or Hues.[5] . When her mother died, her father's papers stipulated that his daughter remained under the guardianship of Colonel George Eskridge [6] but she lived with her married half- sister, Elizabeth Bonum, at Cherry Point. She also had a half-brother named John who died in 1721 and left Mary his estate so she was made into a comfortable position to marry well.

During the American Revolution, Mary provided Patriotic Service by rendering material aid by knitting socks, and by furnishing supplies.[7]

Mary's will is elaborated here : Mary Ball Washington's Will

Burial: Kenmore Plantation and Gardens, Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg City, Virginia.[8]

Death

Mary died August 25, 1789 in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Virginia, United States, due to breast cancer[9]

Mary was also born before 25 June 1711, because Joseph included Mary Ball as a recipient in his will. Mary Ball's parents were Joseph Ball and Mary Montague. Mary Montague is the sister of my direct ancestor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Ball_Washington

Can you provide your sources for this information? This is a true discovery as most professional genealogists have never been able to prove her maiden name. Finding her birth/baptismal or marriage record indicating her maiden name would be something that will hit the newspapers....that is what is so great about WikiTree....having a anyone find something that the rest of us could not find. Please add the image or link or something to point us all in the right direction.

I've been doing genealogy for 40 years, so I'm not exactly a novice. <G>

Thanks, but, the Find A Grave just repeats the "stories" that have been told and are unsupported.

Looks like her maiden name was Bennett, not Montague. 🤬 https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/memories/KXHZ-R9S You'll need to look at all of the pages to get the full story. The essential info is highlighted.

This is why I wish all of the online cooperative family trees would disappear, and be replaced by complete and CORRECT family trees, showing everyone that has ever been born, who has lived more than 24 hours after birth.

Full names, dates, and places. Children shown with their biological parents. Dates using today's calendar, and places using today's world map. Maiden names for women, and no wishful thinking allowed. Everything in English, and no weird letters/accent marks.

Ball-8044 and Ball-463 appear to represent the same person because: same dates and husband

The source for widow Mary Johnson being married first to William Johnson apear to be "Burke's Presidential Families of the United States of America," London: Burke's Peerage (1981), p 15.

Could someone with that book please check p 15 and see what evidence it provides to confirm that she was Mary Bennett, widow of *William* Johnson? Thanks.

Mary, she wasn't the only daughter of Joseph Ball-- he had other daughters by his first wife. See Hayden (1891).
