John Balfour (1851-1869) was born in Delting parish, Shetland on the 9th November 1851 and christened on the 28th January 1852 at the Wesleyan chapel in Northmaven. He was the firstborn son of a crofter and merchant seaman, James Balfour and Elizabeth Anderson.

Their croft was called Hubensetter (various spellings)

and once he finished his schooling, John went to sea like his father in the merchant fishing fleet. He was not quite 18 years old when he succumbed to phthisis (tuberculosis) on the 21st October 1869 at his home.
