Civil War
Newton Baldwin was a Private in Company C, 76th Regiment, New York Infantry. He was captured at the Battle of the Wilderness. He was a prisoner of war held at Andersonville. He testified as a witness for the prosecution during the court martials of the Raiders.
According to the account published in the Sunday Mercury: "According to the testimony of Newton Baldwin, of the 76th New York: Saw Muir engaged in robbing Dowd. Saw him on top of Dowd, trying to cut his pocket and fumbling in it." [2]
After being released from Andersonville, Baldwin re-enlisted in the 147th New York Infantry.
On July 13, 1877, Baldwin filed an application (application no. 239087) for a pension due to his service during the Civil War. He received pension certificate number 203237. On March 1, 1912, his widow filed an application (application number 982345) for a widow's pension. She received pension certificate number 740761. [3]
