Biography

Emilie Baldinger is a descendant of a Texas First Family who settled in the Republic of Texas before February 19, 1846.
Emilie Baldinger has German Roots.

Emilie (a.k.a. Amelia), daughter of Henry Andrew Baldinger and Catherine Simmler, was born 16 December 1872 in Galveston, Galveston County, Texas.[1][2] In 1880, the household in Galveston included her parents Henry (age 38, merchant) and Katherine Baldinger (34), Amelia (7), and her siblings Catherine (11) and Alfred (4).[3] The record indicates that her father was the son of Swiss immigrants, while her maternal grandfather was born in France and grandmother, in Bavaria.[3]

After her father's death in 1896[4] Amelia (age 28) and her sisters Katie (32) and Susie (16) continued to live with their widowed mother Katherine (55, landlord, mother of four, all living) in the home she owned on Jefferson in Houston, Harris County, Texas.[1] None of them were employed outside the home.[1] The record now indicates that Emilie's maternal grandparents were born in Texas.[1]

By 1910, Emilie (age 37) was an inpatient in the State Lunatic Asylum in Austin, Travis County, Texas.[5] At age 46 she was still in that institution in 1920.[6] The last two years of her life were spent at the Kerrville State Home in rural Kerr County, Texas.[7] There she died, unmarried, at age 79 from arteriosclerotic heart disease on 14 June 1953.[7][8] Her remains were interred with those of her parents at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.[2]

Research Notes

  • Birth Date: The 1900 census indicates that her birth was in December 1872[1] and her gravestone shows 16 December 1872.[2] However, her death record gives her birth date as 10 July 1873.[7] Given that two sources use the 1872 date and the asylum's records are the source of the 1873 date, the date of 1872 is being used.
