Henry William was born on the 7 April 1812 in the City of Rochester, on the River Medway, Medway District, in Kent, England[1]. His parents were Henry (Balcomb) and Jane (Hutchings), who married on the 7 July 1811 at the Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Vicarage Close, in the Village of Aylesford, on the River Medway, 4 miles northwest of the Town of Maidstone, in Kent, England[2].

Henry William appears in the 1841 Census living with his wife Sarah (Drew); their children Henry, Alfred, Edwin Charles, Frank, Emma; John and Henage (Phillips); John (Bowmer); Thomas (Taylor); James (Dellatte) and Rebecca (Drew). They all reside at St. Margaret Street, in the City of Rochester, Saint Margaret Parish, in Kent, England[7]. By the Census of 1851, Henry William and Sarah have moved to Gravel Walk, in the City of Rochester, in Kent. They reside there with their children Henry, Alfred, Edwin Charles, Frank, Emma, Martha, Thomas, Robert and Walter and lodgers, James and Fanny (Buck) and Benjamin and Ann (Giles)[8].
The 1861 Census reveals the family have moved once more to Queen Street, Troy Town, in the City of Rochester, on the River Medway, in Kent, England. Henry and Sarah live there with their children Alfred, Martha, Robert, Walter and Albert (Balcomb)[9]. Henry William is now living at 47 Jeyes Street, in the Town of Chatham, Kent with housekeeper, Sarah (Burnett) on the night of the 1871 Census[10]. He is still not living with his wife and children with the 1881 Census. Henry does reside with Housekeeper, Charlotte (Howes) and Lodgers, George and Martha (Cheetham) at 114 Regent Place, in the Town of Chatham, in Kent, England[11].
Occupation
The 1841 Census records his occupation as being a Victualler. However, with the 1851 Census, he has changed trades completely and has become a Tailor. Once more, he has changed his occupation with the 1861 Census. He is now a Coalmeter (a person who assesses the weight or volume of quantities of coal).
With the 1871 Census, he has returned to his roots and is once again a Licenced Victualler. Then, in 1881, he is recorded as being a Brewer's Agent.
Death
Henry William (Balcomb) passes away on the 11 December 1884 at 9 Frederick Street, in the Town of Chatham, on the River Medway, in Kent, England. He was 72 years old at the time of his death[12].
Burial
He is interred on the 16 December 1884 at St. Margaret next Rochester Churchyard, St. Margaret Street, in the City of Rochester, on the River Medway, in Kent, England[13][14].
