I am a 4th generation American. Both branches of my tree, my father's Bohemian family and my mother's Irish and Scottish families were pioneers in the "settling" of midwest America.
I grew up wondering, wanting to learn, among other things, about my paternal roots in Bohemia, a perpetually warred-over little kingdom on the edge of Eastern Europe. When my great-grandparents, Josef and Barbora Baloun left Bohemia in 1866, they were under the rule of the Austrian Empire. For about a decade, the Joseph and Barbara Balaun family lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was during the 1870s that they left Pittsburgh to homestead in Ada, Kansas. Both died before WWI ended with the fall of the Austrian Empire and with the Kingdom of Bohemia becoming part of a new country named Czechoslovakia.
In 1937, just as Hitler was orchestrating the Nazi invasion of Slavic and Czech lands, I was born in Salina, Kansas. My people in America focused on the here and now. I grew up during WWII with little awareness of the lives of the people left behind in former homelands. We celebrated America's role in ending the war and establishing the UN to preserve peace worldwide. Throughout the decades of the communist era in Czechoslovakia, in America we proudly lived "The Dream."
In 1960 during the anti-Soviet cold war, I married John Stearns, a 12th generation New Englander from Vermont, expanding my interest and perspective of family and human history, particularly the history of the establishment of the United States. In 1963 I moved with my husband to his beloved Vermont. We both taught for many years at Leland&Gray, an historic secondary school in the West River Valley, Windham County VT. I have become intrigued with learning about the ever-changing individual lives of ordinary people— in a still-emerging "new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

Margaret, do you speak any Czech or other languages? Would you check out our languages template and add it to your biography? For example you might add
{{ Languages | en | cs-3 }}
to the top of your biography if you speak English natively and advanced Czech, or you could use de-4 to specify near-native German or ru-1 for basic Russian, etc. It really helps to know who speaks all the different languages used on WikiTree!
i added a couple civil war items for Henry Spafford. not sure which prison camp he was held at, we hvve Castle Thunder and Libby Prison both showing as being Richmond Va.
I found more records for this family. I found Josef's parents as well as Josephs's siblings. I think I found the record for Ignatz. I'm still trying to read it. lol!
Do you want me to create the profiles and add you as manager or do you want to create them?
I believe Josef's parents are Jan and Marie.
I added the link to the digital image if you want to look at it.
Hi Margaret, I spent some time today studying up on the Stearns family and Westford. I was able to find plenty of records showing that some of Peters children used the name Sterns without an a, most noted was Harry K. Stearns/Sterns. I found where he acquired the "family farm". I also found a couple of old maps that show where H.K. Sterns was living, he might have moved at least once within the town.
