Biography

Frances "Fanny" Baker was born abt. 1847-1848 in Wye, Kent, England to parents Benjamin Baker (1804-1885) and Frances (Cramp) Baker (1813-bef.1860).[1]

On 30 Mar 1851 Benjamin Baker (45) and his wife, Frances (37), were living in Wye, Kent, England with their children William (15), Robert (13), John (11), Emily Elizabeth (incorrectly named as Henry) (9), Edward (7), Richard (5) and Frances (3). Benjamin was working as a laborer[1]

The family immigration in New York was documented as having been on the "American Eagle" on 25 Mar 1856. The immigrating family was named as Benjamin and "Elisabeth" (Did his wife Frances have a second given name of Elisabeth?) and Robt. 18, John 16, Emily 14, Edwd. 11, Richd. 8, Fanny 6, Eliza 3.

On 3 Aug 1860, Benjamin Baker (63), a farmer who was born in England, a son Robert (22), and daughters Fannie (13) and Eliza (11), all of whom were also born in England, were living in Clay, Onondaga, New York. Her eldest brother, William, apparently emigrated independently from England later. Her mother, Frances (Could name have been Frances Elizabeth? or visa-versa?), evidently died soon after, as the census of 1860 shows Benjamin living at Clay, Onondaga County, New York, with three of his children but no wife. He is listed as B. Baker, a farmer born in England, but his age is given wrongly as 63 when he was actually about 57.[6] The three children with him (shown on the next page of the census return) were Robert 22, Fannie 13, and Eliza 11. Son William was also living in Clay with a wife and daughter.[2]

On 24 Jun 1865, at the age of 17. she was seen living in Vernon, Oneida, New York, with her sister, Emily (23), and brother-in-law, Robert Poile (33) and their 3 children - Henry (7), Alfred (5), and Jennie (4).[3]

Research Notes

Alert: Someone at ancestry has merged two different Frances Baker. This has caused an enormous amount of disinformation being perpetuated. This Fanny was already in the USA on 3 Aug 1860. She was NOT in England in 1901 or 1911 and her name was NOT Helen Louisa Frances.

Need More records for term between Aug 1865 and her death (no death date known). Last seen 24 Jun 1865 while she was living with her sister, Emily Baker Poile. She was not named as living in their home in 1870.

MARRIAGE: Did she marry after Aug of 1865?

CENSUS: Can she be found on any 870 Census

Where was Fanny and what was her name in 1870?
  1. 1870 - She was no longer living with her sister in Oneida, NY.
  2. I have not found Fanny in 1870 or any time after.

DEATH: No Death Record has been found.

  1. Did she die between 1865 and 1870?
  2. Did she marry and/or move ... and if so, where and when?
