He married Ethel May Mather at St John, Derby, in 1912.[2]
He enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters on 13 November 1914, and served in France until 13 April 1915, when he was injured and lost part of his right hand. He returned to the front on 3 March 1916.[3]
He was wounded and captured in the Battle of Lens on 1 July 1917, and died of his wounds in the German military field hospital at Evin-Malmaison on 4 July 1917. His remains were transferred from the municipal cemetery at Evin-Malmaison to the Point-du-Jour military cemetery, Athies near Arras, on 27 September 1920.[4]
