Biography

Valentine was born in 1878. He was the son of Captain Charles Baker and Susan Holland.

His father was a Master Mariner who was drowned in 1883. Valentine was about 5yrs old when his father died and about 7yrs old when he shifted to Auckland with his family. His Mother remarried and his older siblings took over his care. After leaving school he became a range-maker

Valentine served as a Private in the Boer War in South Africa, 1899-1902. (His brother Arthur also served in the Boer War and his older brother George in the First World War.)

I am unsure if Valentine met his wife Mary Ellen [Mollie] Cooper prior to going to Australia or whether he met her in Australia. She was the daughter of Joseph Cooper and Emily. When he got married in 1911 his address is Redfern NSW Australia [1]

When I [Val Goss] started out on researching my family I visited the Whakatane Museum to see what I could find about my Great Grandfather Charles Baker and there on file was this letter from Mavis daughter of Valentine.

"[Found in a letter from Whakatane District Museum dated 8/11/81] “I recently wrote to the Turnbull Library in Wellington seeking information on my Father’s people. Firstly my Father was born in Opotiki in 1879 His name Valentine Henry Baker and his father was Charles Baker Master Mariner born on Sunday Island but came to NZ when he was about 9yrs and resided for 35yrs. On his death certificate it states he was 44yrs of age & the verdict of the Jury was that he was accidentally drowned by the upsetting of a boat on the Opotiki Bar in Feb 1883. The Library also sent me a copy of “Freeholders” which states Baker Master Mariner Opotiki value 200 pounds. They said he’s also mentioned in the Weiss NZ Post Office Directory 1883-84 he was Master of the SS Staffa. Of Charles Baker’s Father I only know he was Daniel Baker married to - Noa [surname] Out Father was part Maori so we believe that it must have been on my Grandmothers side so if you could help me or tell me who could I would be very grateful as I would dearly love to put all the pieces together as our Father was a wonderful man. Hoping you can help me or perhaps tell me who can. Mrs Mavis Young [Nee Baker]”

I did meet Mavis when I was young - I am saddened that she never got to hear about our "Baker" family history and the wonderful ancestors we both shared.
