David Jewett Baker was born in 1792 in Connecticut, United States of America.
He studied law and was admitted to the bar of Illinois, United States, in 1819. He married Sarah Tenney Fairchild.
He practised law in Kaskaskia, Randolph County, Illinois. He became a United States Senator for Illinois in November 1830, when he was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John McLean, serving only until December of that year.
He served as United States Attorney for the Illinois district from 1833 to 1841.
Sarah (Fairchild) Baker died in 1859, and David J. Baker married Elizabeth Swanwick in 1860.
He died in 1869. He is buried in Alton Cemetery, Alton, Madison County, Illinois.
