David served NZ in WW1. He was in the Army and his Service Number was WWI 40862 He was a Private with the Otago Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion
His next of kin was Mrs J. Baird (wife), 5 Ocean View, Mornington, Dunedin, New Zealand. David and Jessie had three children:

David left from Wellington NZ 14 March 1917 aboard HMNZT 79 Ruapehu bound for Devonport, England, arriving 21 May 1917. He was a Private in the 23rd Reinforcements Otago Infantry Regiment, D Company New Zealand Expeditionary Force
David was killed in action 12 Oct 1917 in Ypres, Belgium. I think his death was not registered until later in NZ 1918 [6]
David Baird has no known grave. He was killed in action Passchendaele Belgium. Many bodies were not recovered and the soldiers names are on the memorial wall along with Davids. What a lovely setting and beautifully kept for all those soldiers so far from their homes.
David's Memorial is at Tyne Cot Memorial, Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium
David was a Presbyterian
David was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal
David Baird was the husband of Mrs J. Baird, of 72, Newton Road, Auckland, New Zealand. I presume she shifted to Auckland after his death.
