Alexander Bain is a member of Clan MacKay.

Alexander Bain was born about 1831 and was baptised in Watten, Caithness, on 24 July 1831.^[1]

He was living with his mother and three brothers in Watten, Caithness in 1841.^[2]

Alexander was an apprentice painter by 1851, lodging in a house at Front Street, Wick.^[3]

He married Catherine Nicolson on 28 Feb 1856 in Wick.^[4] They had seven children.

Alexander and Catherine had moved to Glasgow by 1861 and were living at 57 Wellington Lane with their sons, Alexander (2) and Donald (3 months).^[5] Their son, Donald, died in 1863.^[6]

The Bain family were living at 71 Waterloo Street, Glasgow in 1871. There were now six children aged between 11 months and 12 years. Alexander was employed as a house painter. ^[7]

By 1881, the family were living at 31 Russell Street, Glasgow.^[8]

Alexander was found dead in the River Clyde, Glasgow on 31 May 1897.^[9] He was last seen alive on 28th November 1896. The Procurator Fiscal found the cause of his death to be drowning - probably accidental.^[10]

Research Notes

Marriage record (1856) states that Alexander's parents were Alexander Bain, Farmer (deceased) and Margaret Bain, maiden name Mulliken. Wife Catherine's parents were Donald Nicolson, Farm Servant and Ann Nicolson, maiden name Dunnet.
