Biography

Leland Bailey was born in 1823 (see research note) in Tazewell County, Virginia (see research note) to Jonathan Bailey and Elizabeth Thompson[1]. In the 1850 Federal Census, Leland lived with his parents and nine siblings in Mercer County, Virginia[2]. Leland's occupation was "labourer"[2].

Sometime before 1860 (probably around 1856, based on the age of their first child), Leland married Rebecca Bailey. Rebecca was born 25 April 1828[3] in Virginia to Archibald Bailey and Elizabeth Lusk[4]. Leland and Rebecca were first cousins - their fathers were brothers, both children of John Payton Bailey and Nancy Ann (Davidson) Bailey. Leland and Rebecca were also second cousins - his father and her mother were first cousins with common great grandparents Richard Payton Bailey Sr. and Elizabeth Anne (Belcher) Bailey.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Leland and Rebecca lived in Mercer County, Virginia with their first two children[5]. Leland's occupation was "farmer"[5]. Also in their household was a 13 year old boy named Patrick Thompson[5] (relationship unknown, but possibly related to Leland's mother, Elizabeth Thompson).

In the 1870 Federal Census, Leland and Rebecca continued living in Mercer County, now part of West Virginia, and now with five children[6].

On 10 April 1871, In Mercer County, West Virginia, Leland's father signed his last will and testament[1]. This will named Leland as an executor, and after his father's death, was accepted by the Mercer County court on 8 September 1871[1] (see transcription in the research notes of his father's profile).

On 14 April 1876, Rebecca's father, Archibald, signed his will[4]. Both Rebecca and Leland were named within Archibald's will[4] (see transcription in the research notes on Archibald's profile). The will was accepted by the Mercer County court on 12 December 1876[4].

In the 1880 Federal Census, Leland, Rebecca, and their five children, continued living in Mercer County, West Virginia[7].

Leland and Rebecca had five children together[8]:

  1. James B. Bailey b.1856 d. 1905[9]
  2. Melissa Catherine (Bailey) Hale b. 1858 d. 1923[10]
  3. John T. Bailey b. 1862 d. 1934[11]
  4. Alexander W. Bailey b. 1864 d. 1911[12]
  5. Albany Virginia (Bailey) (Carr) Meador b. 1866 d. 1944[13]

Leland was 59 years old when he passed away in 1882 (see research note)[14]. It appears that he died without a will. On 8 August 1882, the Mercer County Court appointed his son, James B. Bailey, as the administrator responsible for settling Leland's estate[14]. There is a memorial for Leland in Walnut Grove Cemetery, located near Bluefield, Mercer, West Virginia[15].

Research Notes

Birth Year

A birth record for Leland has yet to be located. Other sources provide evidence for when he was born:
  • The 1850 census estimates he was born in 1823[2].
  • The 1860 census estimates he was born in 1821[5].
  • The 1870 census estimates that he was born in 1824[6].
  • The 1880 census estimates that he was born in 1825[7].
  • His Find-a-Grave profile includes a photo of a (perhaps modern?) grave marker that indicates he was born on 2 Feb 1823[15].

Birth Location

A birth record for Leland has yet to be located. The four census records in which he was enumerated all indicate that he was born in Virginia[2][5][6][7]. Based on where his parents were from, where he married Rebecca, and where they settled, combined with his birth year - it seems likely that Leland was born in either Tazewell or Giles County, Virginia, probably in a location that later became Mercer County, West Virginia.

Death Date

A death record for Leland has yet to be located. Since the probate record[14] that initiated the settlement of his estate was dated 8 August 1882, it seems clear that he passed away in 1882. His Find-a-Grave profile[15], however, includes a photo of a (perhaps modern?) memorial for Leland that indicates he died on 28 April 1882, a bit more than three months prior to the probate record.
