Biography

SSGT Charles Bailey served with the United States Army during the Spanish-American War.
Service Started: May 11,1898
Unit(s): 7th Bt. 22 Infantry Regiment
Service Ended: Dec 9, 1901

  • Career Army.
  • Married Linda Christina/Kristina Lindqvist/Lindquist.

She was born 23 Feb 1868, in Sweden; died 4 Jul 1952, in Monterey, Monterey County,CA

  • Married in Chicago, 14 Mar 1903.

The photo copy of the marriage license includes: "Marriage may be celebrated between Mr Charles W Bailey of Evansville in the County of Vanderburg and State of Indiana of the age of 23 years, and Miss[?] Linda Lindquist of Highland Park in the County of ___ and the State of Illinois of the age of 34 years."

According to Louise Bailey(note accompanying some Willoughby tree correspondence):
Charles and Linda had twins - a boy and a girl. Photo of Linda and infant twins outside tent while building their house, in Monterey, CA, shows children names- Earl and Adnil Lorraine. The boy died at 8 yrs - was kicked in the temple while sitting on a retaining wall at school, by a player in a kick ball game.
This is inconsistent with death certificate, listing cause of death as tuberculosis and meningitis.

  • 1939 Los Angeles Marriage license for Adnil Lorraine Bailey and Moses Rosenberg.

Lorraine died in 1952, (Supposedly died on the beach. Unknown circumstances.) Death index and grave marker shows last name Bailey.

Burial

  • Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, USA., Plot: Section O Site 928.
Charles and Linda are buried together, they share the headstone - Charles on the front, Linda on the back.

Research Notes

1920 Census has names correct, but lists Charles age as 38 vice 40-41. Linda's age listed as 42 vice 52. Their age difference was roughly 11 yrs. Charles occupation listed as "soldier, US Army", but not able to read or write

Son, Earl, is likely buried in San Francisco National Cemetery. Uncorroborated, but findagrave indicates based on US Dept Veterans Affairs imported data. Says: "The child of C.W. Bailey, civilian."
