Alfred Baigent migrated from England to New Zealand.
Biography
Alfred was born in 1833 in Surrey, England. He was the second son of Edward Baigent and Mary Ann Hern. The family emigrated to New Zealand when he was a boy, and arrived on the ship "Clifford" in 1842 and settled in Wakefield near Nelson. His father became was an influential pioneer, and became a Member of Parliament.
Alfred married Sarah Price in 1857 and they settled in Riversdale. They had several children: 5 sons and 4 daughters. Alfred joined the family business and was a sawmiller.
The late Mr Alfred Baigent was an enthusiastic cricketer, and was included in the first representative provincial team ever sent from Nelson to Wellington. It took them three weeks to return home. Some got as far as Picton, and walked all the way through the bush home. This was no light task, considering that there were no roads and few tracks through this land of mountains, streams, and forest. Their captain was MrSellon, [1]
He passed away in 1883 after falling down some stairs and injuring his spine. Alfred died as a result of his injuries at the age of 49, but had sufficient capacity to complete a will on the 20th of April shortly before he died. He wasn't able to write it himself, but had it read through to him and attached his mark in front of witnesses.
His funeral was on 24th April in Wakefield. He is interred at St John's in Wakefield, joining an infant son who had died in 1872. His wife, Sarah was also buried there when she died in 1902.
