After obtaining her passport and physical, Herta took a train on September 13, 1947 to Frankfurt, Germany: then she flew to New York with all of her worldly possessions in two suitcases - especially important to her was a crystal plate of cut glass approximately sixteen inches in diameter given to her by her Uncle Johann's wife as a wedding gift. [3]

Harold Phipps, one of Jim's army buddies, met her at the airport and took her to Johnson City, New York where Jim joined her in three days by bus - Herta's flight had been postponed so many times before that Jim had decided to take the bus after her plane had arrived in New York." [3]

As Harold Phipp's father, Walter, was a Methodist minister; he married them in a country church in Vestal, New York. Herta wore a light blue crepe dress; Harold and Marion Phipps were witnesses for them. The wedding date was not until September 24th, so that the blood tests could be read and the papers could be processed; then they took a train on the 25th or 26th to Chicago to stay a few days with William Tomaszewski, another army buddy, and his parents - this was their honeymoon. Then off to Sioux City, Iowa, by train and a taxi ride to the home of Alfred Schenck, James parents, to get their vehicle so they could drive to their new home. [3]

Naturalization: October 1951

In 1951 Herta was able to take her citizenship test since the three-year residency requirement had been met; she had been too ill to go to night school to study for the examination as she was pregnant with her son; however, in October of 1951, when she was called to take the test, the only problem she incurred was the question of "who was the Father of our Country?"
