Joshua (Bagnell) Moseley was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Joshua (Bagnell) Moseley was born on 21 Apr 1857 in Newtown, New South Wales, Australia^[1][2], son of Elizabeth Lillian H. (Bagnall) Moseley (1834 - 1903). Joshua was baptised on 24 May 1857 at St Peters Anglican Church, St Peters.^[3][4]

Joshua married Mary Elizabeth Shepherd (1862 - 1959) on 10 Oct 1881 in Petersham, New South Wales.^[5]

Joshua died on 24 Oct 1930 in Peakhurst, New South Wales aged 73.^[6][7] Joshua is buried in St. Saviour's Church of England Cemetery, Punchbowl.^[8]

Research Notes

Birth Name - Joshua has a birth record with the surname Bagnell (his mother's maiden name was Bagnall) and the surname Hibbert. At 1 month old Joshua was baptised and the father was listed as Thomas Mosely who his mother went on to marry in 1861. His brother, Thomas Henry Mosley, who was born in 1859 also has a birth record with the surnames Bagnall and Hibbert, but was baptised at 2 weeks old with Thomas Mosely again named as the father. On both of these records she gives her name as Elizabeth Evetts, so it is very unlikely she married anyone by the name of Hibbert before her sons were born. There is no record of a Hibbert anywhere else. It is possible it was a misspelling of their mother's married name Evetts, though a bit of a stretch.

It is believed that their mother was abandoned by her first husband in 1853, shortly after the death of their son, John Evetts (1853-1853). It is possible she was living with Thomas Mosley but was unable to marry him due to still being married to John Evetts legally. This makes it likely that Thomas Henry Mosley is the biological father especially as he declared himself the father at the baptisms, but will likely need DNA to confirm it.
