Biography

Captain Bowman Bacon served in the United States Civil War.

Captain Bowman Bacon died of his wounds during Battle of Kennesaw Mountain during United States Civil War.

Bowman was born in 1823 in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Ira Bacon and Sarah Bowman. His father died when he was two and his mother asked that her father John Bowman be appointed guardian. [1]

He came to Lee County, Illinois in 1839. He studied at River Seminary (now Mt Morris College). In 1850 was studying law with H. A. Mix while living in Mt. Morris with Favid Pinkney. [2]

He married Almira Robinson, widow of William Fuller in 1852. [3]

They had one son, Francis Bacon, 1858–1920.

They farmed in Oregon. [4][5]

In August 1862 Bowman was commissioned Captain in Company G, 74th Regiment, Illinois Infantry, “where he evinced great bravery in many a hard-fought battle; a perfect tactician, always cool, he soon became a great favorite with all his men as well as everyone who came in contact with him.[6]

On July 27, 1864 he shot in the arm during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. On July 12 they amputated his right arm near the shoulder and then his left arm was amputated on July 19. He died of pyaemia (blood poisoning) on July 21, 1864 at the officer’s field hospital in Nashville. His wife was with him. [7][8][9][10][11]
