Archelas Purdy Babbitt was born in 1809 and was baptized April 5, 1811 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He was the son of David Lee Babbitt and Mary Ann Purdy[1]
He moved to Wellington Ontario, near Picton, where he had a tannery[1]
He married Rhoda "Sophie" Thorne, who was born in 1816 and died June 14, 1839[1] (or 1843 FAG132469991) . Their children included:
Robert[1], born 1841, who married Elisabeth Ketchum[2]
Phoebe Elizabeth, who married Paul Leavens[1], and who died in 1919[3]

His second wife was Matilda Niles, daughter of Stephen Niles of Wellington, ON. She was born in 1822, and died December 15, 1858[1]. Their children included:
Stephen born 1846, who married Mary Sutherland[4], and then Agnes Long[5]
Lydia, born 1851[6], who married John Stapleton [7]
