Matthew was the son of Alfred and Hester Lush Axford. He was baptized 30 Jun 1816 in Westbury, Wiltshire. Matthew had two younger sisters, both named Sarah. The first, born in 1818, died as an infant. The second was born in 1820. On 7 Aug 1841, Matthew married Elizabeth Silcox at St. James, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England. As a Wool Dyer, Matthew had been in the employment of Mrs. Webber at her dye house for 30 yrs. He died at his home on Timbrell St.
