Biography

This David Avery was born in Preston, Connecticut, 5 Nov 1764. He was a son of Samuel Avery and Mary Barnes. [1]

American Revolutionary War service: At the age of 16, he entered the Revolutionary service under Capt. William Latham; was made ensign of the first company, 8th reg't, May, 1795; major, 1802; lieutenant-commandant, 8th reg't of militia, 1804. (Ms. State Papers, Hartford). He was a pensioner from Lebanon, in 1840. [2]

He married 15 Nov 1787 in Preston, Connecticut, Hannah Avery (1767-1843). They had ten (known) children[1]:

  1. Polly Avery, b. 24 Aug 1788; unmarried; d. 10 Jun 1878
  2. Samuel Avery (1790-1872); married Elizabeth "Betsey" Avery
  3. Hannah Avery, b. 4 Apr 1792
  4. Zipporah Avery, b. 3 Jul 1794
  5. Jabez Avery, b. 8 Aug 1796
  6. Prudence Avery, b. 7 Jan 1799
  7. David Avery, b. 8 Apr 1801
  8. Anna Avery, b. 19 Jul 1804; unmarried; d. 2 Aug 1834
  9. John Avery, b. 9 Nov 1806
  10. Amos Avery, b. 1 Mar 1809; died young

Col. David Avery died 26 Mar 1843 at Franklin, Connecticut. His grave is in Center Cemetery, Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut, USA [1][3].
