William Woods Averell was a career United States Army officer and a cavalry general in the American Civil War. After the war, he was a diplomat and became wealthy by inventing American asphalt pavement. [1]
William Woods Averell was born on 5 November 1832, 2nd son of Hiram and Huldah (Hemeway) Averell.
William married on 24 September 1885, at age fifty-three, to Kezia Hayward Browning, an English widow, . There were no children from this marriage, but the general and Kezia bestowed much of their interest on the youngest of his sisters, Sarah Averell Dascomb and Lucy Averell Henica.
