Biography

John was born about 1690 in France and emigrated to America with at least three brothers and their families before 1725, when his wife Hannah and two of their children were among the first baptized at the new Prince Frederick Winyaw Parish.[1] John passed away in 1748.[2]

John and Hannah had the following known children:

  1. John Avant (~1716)
  2. Lydia Avant (1718)
  3. Francis Avant (1722)
  4. Hannah Avant (1725)
  5. Rebecca Avant (1728)

Will of John Avant
John's will, signed and dated 20 January 1747 and presented in court at Charleston on 15 April 1750, made the following provisions:[3]

— Son Francis and his heirs: "one Mustee Man named Cupit"
— Daughter Lydia and her heirs: "one Mustee Woman named Philis and her increase"
— Daughter Hannah: "one Mustee Woman named Mary and her child Tenny"
— Daughter Rebecca: "one Mustee Girl named Jude"
— Son John: "one Negro Man named Jack and one Negro Man named Lonnun and one Indian Woman named Hager and one Mustee Boy named Jose" and the tract of land I now live on.
— Grandchildren Sarah Avant, William Green, and Francis Green: specific cattle
Witnesses: Sam Cleat, James Hopton, Meredith Hughes
Executor: Francis Avant

Research Notes

  • One researcher notes an Inventory made 16 apr 1750, but it has not been found online.
  • Son John died in 1760 in Prince Fred. PR Fred Lists wife Ann in will. will prob 7 oct 1760. John and Francis bought land together.[citation needed]
