  • 1769 moved to Paris, styled actress Julie Niébert's hair which led to interest from noblewomen. Was hairstylist to Madame du Barry (King's mistress), a lady-in-waiting to the Marie-Antionette and eventually (1772) to Marie Antionette herself.
  • Shot to fame in Paris after being in town only a few weeks[2]
  • Journal des Dames
  • Académie de coiffeur ("a virtual House of Léonard") - setting it up with two of his brothers, Jean-Francois and Pierre
    • All three brothers used the professional name Monsieur Léonard, building on Léonard's initial success[1][3]
  • c1779 - married Marie Louise Adélaïde Jacobie Malacrida, who was the daughter of Jacques Malacrida[1] (div. 1794)
  • 1787 wealth allowed him to pursue other avenues of interest and with Marie Antionette's encouragement he started a new career as an opera impresario[1]
  • younger brother Jean-François, took over his daily duties to the Queen and became the head of the Académie de coiffure[1]
  • Fled abroad during the French Revolution, eventually going to Russia. Returned to France after Louis XVIII was restored.[1]
    • Verona, where Louis XVIII was set up in an exiles court[4]

    • St. Petersburg, Russia - established a comfortable life and lived there for 16 years. 3 years into life there, he styled the corpse of Tsar Paul I after his murder.[4] - fire destroyed his personal papers
    • 1814 returned to France, doorkeeper to Louis XVIII's apartments but had expected more (like a possible title). Later appointed Orderer General of State Funerals.[4]
