James Coats was born in 1885, the son of Edgar Sterling Auchincloss and Maria LaGrange Sloan. He married Lee Frances Alexander in 1909.[1] James passed away in 1976.[2]
US Congressman. Born in New York City, New York, he graduated from Yale University in 1908. Entering the financial world, he went on to have a 30 year career as a successful and influential broker on Wall Street in New York City, New York, serving as governor of the New York Stock Exchange from 1921 to 1938. In 1922 he co-founded the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan New York to fight investment fraud. He served as Mayor of Rumson, New Jersey from 1938 to 1943 before option to run for national office. In 1943 he was elected as a Republican to represent New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District in the United House of Representatives, and served eleven consecutive terms from 1943 to 1965. After declining to run for a 12th Congressional term in 1964, he retired to Alexandria, Virginia to be near his family, where he died there at the age of 91.
