The revised c. birthdate is based on 2017 research conducted by Darrell Wolcott – Center for the Study of Ancient Wales. His calculated c. birthdates vary from those of Peter Bartrum, Theophilus Jones, Dr. Myron Evans, and others primarily due to additional Aubrey/Awbreys discovered by Wolcott - Reginald Awbrey, William Awbrey, Thomas Awbrey, and Sir Thomas Awbrey.

The Research Study provides a thorough analysis by Wolcott, in Part 2, of the various sources used to support these Aubrey/Awbreys and their c. birthdates.[1]

Research Notes

Bartrum Charts

Two Bartrum charts are attached to this profile (Aubrey 3 and Aubrey 4). Aubrey 3 lists nine daughters of Hopkin and the following sons: two Williams, two Thomases, John, Jenkin, and Morgan.

Children Confusion

Prepared by: Stuart Awbrey 26 Nov 2022
Bartrum’s Chart for Hopkin: lists William (first born and heir) and Thomas of Cantref on the same line and coded “14” indicating same generation. It lists two wives for William - his first in generation 14 and his second in 15: (1) Mawd ferch Philip, (2) Jane ferch Sir Richard Herbert. The children are coded "(1)" or "(2)" to show who was their mother. (See Aubrey 4, attached.)
Under William coded “1” are:
unnamed daughter who married Hywell ap Gwilym
Joan who married unknown Taylor of London
Magred who married John ap Dd Lloyd
Morgan who married Crisli ferch Roger
Also under William coded “2” are:
Janet
John who married Gwenllian of Tos ap John
Richard of Abercynrig (known first born and heir of William)
William D.C.L. (also known son of William)
The Baronetage of England by John Debrett, published 1824
The Baronetage of England, see pages 137-43: lists the family but there are errors and inconsistencies which make it not reliable. Also, only lists sons (Jenkin, Thomas, Morgan, Willimus, and Wilfimus).
Aubrey/Awbrey Dominion and Decline by Jon Awbrey provides a reasonable list of children but the cited source is incorrect. Aubrey/Awbrey Dominion and Decline by Jon Awbrey, see page 11:
William
Jenkin
Thomas
John of London
Feliece who married John Herbert of Llangonydd
Margaret who married Henry Powell of Reeding
Jenet who married John ap Roger Vaughan of Cathedine
unnamed daughter who married Thomas John
unnamed daughter who married Walter Thomas
